Mastering Flight Operations at a Towered Field

My goal for today's flight was to get to the point where I feel as comfortable flying to and around a towered field as I currently do at an uncontrolled tower. When I first started flying I was flying from...

Back in the Saddle Again

The aircraft mechanics were able to repair my ride so I took to the skies tonight. My CFI and I spent some extra time with our pre-flight as we were the first to fly the plane since having the spark...

Somethings Not Right

After a great cross-country night flight I was anxious to get back in the plane. My CFI and I headed out to the run-up area next to the runway to do our pre-flight checklist. The airplane has two sets of...

Completing Night Flight Requirements

One downside to learning to fly in the summer is that earning night flight hours requires you to commit to a few late nights. I had logged one hour of night flight with two landings before today. The goal tonight...

Exploring New Turf

When I woke up and looked outside I knew it would be a nice day to fly. I was scheduled to fly at noon. By then the temperature would be rising, causing for a more turbulent flight so I regretted...

Mastering Landings While Exploring New Airports

Tonight's flight was my best flight in weeks. I mentioned to my CFI that I have not been happy with my landings as of late. I know that pilots go through funks but I was frustrated by it. So we...

Back in the Air

After my longest break from flying since I began learning to fly, I returned to the skies this evening. My last flight was a brief solo flight a week and a day ago. In that flight I had a frustrating...

Reviewing Manuevers

The weather in the area surrounding Blue Ash Airport (KISZ) was not good this evening. There were a bunch of storms north and to the west. I called 1-800-WX-BRIEF and talked about the forecast with the weather briefer. It looked...

Soft and Short-Field Takeoff and Landings

Today's lesson plan was to practice short-field approach and landings and soft-field approach and landings. My instructor found a great airport where we could cover all these maneuvers in one location. She selected Red Stewart Airport (K401) in Waynesville, Ohio....

What's Better Than a Cross Country? Two Cross-Countries!

This weekend I spent an hour or two planning my first flight that would count toward cross-country training. Luckily, it is not as tasking as it sounds. In order for a flight to be counted as a cross-country flight, the...

Cross Country Preperation

After my solo flight on Tuesday I have been itching to get back in the plane. The weather was beautiful today with light winds and great visibility. When I arrived at the airport, my instructor suggested we practice some of...

Pre-Solo Review

Prior to being endorsed by a CFI to fly the plane solo a student must pass a written pre-solo exam, review the required flight maneuvers, receive a Class III Medical Certificate with Student Pilot License and meet the approval of...

Valuable Lesson

My tenth lesson barely made it in before the storms. For the past few weeks I have been forced to monitor the weather reports frequently to decide whether I would be able to fly. Tonight, I arrived at the airport...

Landing Practice - An Important Lesson

My Instructor called me a few hours before our lesson and suggested we move our lesson up by an hour or two to avoid an incoming storm. When I arrived at the airport the weather still looked safe to fly...

Unusual Attitudes and Ground Reference Manuevers

The title is not referencing my attitude but that of the C-152 I am learning to fly. As you may have read, I have moved my flight training to Blue Ash Airport, a small uncontrolled field. Today's lesson was my...

Learning to Land

Tonight I finally learned how to land. By that I mean how to execute a nice easy full stall landing that touches down gently on the runway. In my training thus far I have experienced ten landings. Only one of...

Buzzin' the Barnyard

Tonight, I once again received help from Mother Nature when some light thunderstorms cleared the area about 30 minutes before my lesson. Prior to the lesson, I reviewed what I would be learning during tonight's flight. As usual, we reviewed...

We Are Going to Do What?

When I arrived at Queen City Flight Training today my Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) reviewed the lesson plan for today. First off, we were slated to review what I learned the week before. In that lesson I experimented with the...

Night Flight to Uncontrolled Airport

Because I believe in challenges I planned my second lesson at night, or 'cause that was the available time. But I am glad I did, as this evening was a beautiful night to fly. After pre-flighting the aircraft on my own, my instructor and I taxied out and took off to the Lunken practice area. We spent about 25 minutes going through the things I learned last week. For the most part I retained most those learnings. So it was time to try something new. We had Clermont County Airport on the horizon. Clermont is an uncontrolled airport and the home of Sporty's Pilot Shop. My Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) explained how to communicate our intentions to enter the pattern and land to our fellow pilots in the area. I almost seemed more confusing than talking to a controlled environment.

What Goes Up Must Come Down

Lucky for me we came down safely each time we went up. Today, I completed my first full flight lesson, logging 1.1 hours of flight time. My instructor and I spent about 30 minutes taking our time going through the...
