Three Eight Charlie - Jerrie Mock's Record Breaking Flight Around the World
As I mentioned in a recent post Jerrie Mock was the first woman to fly solo around the world. She departed on March 19, 1964 in a Cessna 180 Skywagon from Columbus, Ohio. During her flight she flew several 12 hour plus legs through terrible conditions including: sandstorms, thunderstorms, icing, rain and excessive heat. She also battled fatigue and equipment problems along the way. Twenty-nine and half days after departing Columbus she returned to Columbus and flew into the history books as the first woman to fly solo around the world. Her story is one not many know. I encourage you to read my blog post about her flight and visit this site dedicated to getting her story told.
